MD DATA DISC JOINS MD-XG AUDIO DISC IN TDK RECORDABLE MINIDISC LINE

PORT WASHINGTON, NY, November 18, 1996-- Drawing upon its technological expertise of over a decade of optical disk manufacturing, TDK is the first media specialist company to offer a magneto- optical disk for use with the MD Data Drive: a compact, portable, battery-powered data storage and retrieval device about the size of a personal stereo.

Measuring just 2 ¾" square, the TDK MD Data Disc is smaller than a conventional floppy disk. However, its 140MB capacity is 100 times greater than conventional floppy disks.

The TDK MD Data Disc uses ultra-reliable magneto-optical technology. This method of data storage and retrieval is virtually invulnerable to magnetic fields, minimizing the possibility of accidental erasure. The recording layer consists of a proprietary Terbium Ferric Cobalt alloy for exceptionally low block error rates and minimal time-based error ("jitter") over a wide range of laser powers. Silicon- based dielectric layers, a specially-designed reflective layer and an exceptionally transparent polycarbonate resin substrate assure optimum laser read/write efficiency. Recognizing the need for repeated use, TDK MD Data Discs are rewritable up to 1 million times.

TDK MD Data Discs and MD-XG audio discs represent the state-of-the-art in optical disk manufacturing technology, using the highest-quality materials and construction to assure maximum

performance and reliability in a wide range of environments. This unique protective housing is fabricated from an advanced heat-resistant polycarbonate material. A metal shutter is employed to keep out dust and airborne contaminants. In addition, the see-through carrying case features a locking mechanism to prevent the disk from accidentally falling out.

TDK MD Data Discs are compatible with both PC and Macintosh applications, giving every computer user the opportunity to benefit from this state-of-the-art data storage format.
